Can You Force Someone into Vancouver Rehab?

Can You Force Someone into Vancouver Rehab?

The number of deaths through drug addiction in Vancouver is unprecedented. Reports show that in March 2018 there were 161 deaths from drug overdoses, and the number and frequency of deaths by drug overdose has been steadily increasing month by month.

If you know someone who is addicted to drugs, you may think that the best course of action is to force them into rehab, especially if the addict is your child and they are refusing to accept treatment. But enforced drug rehab is not the answer.

There are only a few situations that legally allows enforced hospitalization:

  1. If they are in danger of inflicting harm on themselves or others.
  2. If someone has a drug-related criminal conviction and the criminal justice systems enforces enrollment in a drug rehabilitation program.
  3. If you are the legal guardian of a drug addict who is a minor.

Enforced drug rehabilitation may seem like a solution to addiction, but studies have shown that compulsory rehab does not ensure long-term results.

The best course of action is to get in touch with an interventionist. Vancouver interventions have a high success rate, and in fact, addicts who seek treatment have a better chance of kicking the habit because they want to beat the addiction, and not because they are being forced to enter a rehab center.

People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol are often using it to mask emotional pain or trauma, and trying to force them into treatment may only push them further away from you. It can reinforce emotional pain and the feeling that they are unheard, unwanted, and it can feed their sense of insecurity and lack of independence.

No matter how hostile or aggressive an addict behaves, what they need is love, compassion, and understanding. The best way to help them drop their defense system and accept treatment is by helping them understand how they are harming themselves and the people they love, and giving them lots of emotional support.

That sounds easy, but it’s not. Especially when the addict becomes manipulative and aggressive and refuses to accept your help, or your love. This is where a professional interventionist can help. We know when to apply pressure and when to back off. We know how to hold a conversation that encourages open dialogue and honest responses. But most importantly, we know how to support and guide you through each step that brings your loved one closer to accepting treatment.

Once your child, partner, or friend accepts their addiction and decides they want to stop the addiction, an interventionist can help you find a treatment center that works best for your family, your lifestyle, and your budget.

Getting a loved one into rehab is the most important step; it’s also the most difficult step, but we can help.

We know how it feels to lose a loved one to a drug addiction. We have seen how difficult it is for families of addicts to stay grounded and positive. But we also know that rehab treatment works, and when an addict decides to accept treatment following an intervention, we know that we’ve helped one family get their life back on track.

This may be a dark time, but we can help you through it, and there is light at the end of this journey.

So stay strong, make the call, and take the first step towards recovery.
