Is Your Loved One an Alcoholic or Addict?

Is Your Loved One an Alcoholic or Addict?

Answer as many of these questions as you can. If your answer yes, take a moment to look over the question and write out a honest answer or remember a situation when this has happened.  These questions will help with Step One of any drug or alcohol fellowship program.

If your loved one has answered yes to 2 or more of these questions its time to get him or her help. We recommend you investigate alcohol or drug intervention services or drug and alcohol treatment options in Canada.

1. Has your loved one or family member ever decided to stop drinking or using DRUGS FOR a short time, but only lasted for a couple days?

Maybe they’ve had a time when they were just fed up with drinking or using drugs “socially.” They tried to quit, poured out bottles or deleted a drug dealer’s number only to be back using or drinking just hours or days later.

2. Did THEY EVER go back on a promise or a commitment due to drugs or alcohol?

Maybe it was work and they were too intoxicated to make the drive. Or they missed a commitment because they couldn’t hold a conversation or look people in the eye. Alcoholics and substance abuse users use substances to numb emotions and guilt.

3. Have THEY EVER switched from one kind of drink or drug to another in the hope that they would be able to quit using their drug or alcohol drink of CHOICE?

Maybe they have tried switching from hard alcohol to beer, or just trying to enjoy alcohol without getting too drunk. Did they have any failed attempts at controlling their substance use by switching substances, only to find you still become overly intoxicated or addicted to the drug of choice?

4. Has yours or your loved ones drinking or using drugs caused family problems in the HOME, at their WORK OR with friends?Have you ever felt embarrassed because of your loved ones drinking or using?

Have you or the addict isolated from family or friends because they were too intoxicated to spend time with them or felt they “knew” and were judging the situation and talking behind your back? Have there been times you’ve had trouble with family and friends because of there drinking or using? Have you or your loved one called in sick for work because of their addiction or alcoholism?

5. Have they ever had legal problems for being drunk in public, driving while impaired or been late on bills or owed people money for drugs or alcohol?

6. When the loved one is using drugs or alcohol frequently, do they ever feel lonely, depressed, blame everyone else for their problems or talk about being suicidal?

7. Do you feel life would be better if they stopped drinking or using drugs?

Many people define themselves as social drinkers and users:

If they need to drink or do a drug before they start their day, it doesn’t matter if its daily or many times a week, if they drink when you’re not in social situations they are not a social drinker, and they may be having problems with alcohol or drugs.
