ADDICTION HELP IN EDMONTON
DRUG & ALCOHOL ABUSE SUPPORT
The capital of Alberta, Edmonton sits on the North Saskatchewan River and anchors the north end of what Statistics Canada defines as the “Calgary–Edmonton Corridor”. Edmonton is Canada’s fifth-largest municipality.
As with all of Canada’s large cities, there is no shortage of drug-use in Edmonton. From the end of March to the end of December 2018, there were nearly 29,300 visits to the city’s supervised injection sites where clients can access social and mental health services and treatment. Supervised injection sites and improving access to opiate addiction treatments are a few of the ways that the city is trying to save lives.
While safe injection sites have been incredibly successful at reducing the number of overdose deaths, this success may be short-lived. It’s true that naloxone can reverse the powerful effects of an opioid overdose almost immediately, however it will not work as an antidote for other substances, including a recent influx of new designer drugs. It’s been said numerous times, but taking street drugs is like playing Russian roulette with lives. Street drugs are often laced with other, more potent drugs, making every dose a potentially deadly cocktail.
