The capital of Alberta, Edmonton sits on the North Saskatchewan River and anchors the north end of what Statistics Canada defines as the “Calgary–Edmonton Corridor”. Edmonton is Canada’s fifth-largest municipality.
As with all of Canada’s large cities, there is no shortage of drug-use in Edmonton. From the end of March to the end of December 2018, there were nearly 29,300 visits to the city’s supervised injection sites where clients can access social and mental health services and treatment. Supervised injection sites and improving access to opiate addiction treatments are a few of the ways that the city is trying to save lives.
While safe injection sites have been incredibly successful at reducing the number of overdose deaths, this success may be short-lived. It’s true that naloxone can reverse the powerful effects of an opioid overdose almost immediately, however it will not work as an antidote for other substances, including a recent influx of new designer drugs. It’s been said numerous times, but taking street drugs is like playing Russian roulette with lives. Street drugs are often laced with other, more potent drugs, making every dose a potentially deadly cocktail.
Safe injection sites are only putting a bandaid on the problem. To change lives, the addiction itself needs to be addressed.
When someone needs drugs or alcohol to get them through the day and is unable to stop taking these substances or stimulants by themselves, it might be time to consider an intervention, especially if work and relationships are being affected by the dependency.

Andy is a compassionate person who went above and beyond to assist my family with helping a loved one. He was able to direct us (family) to the right support programs and my family member towards a healthy stable recovery. His passion for helping far exceeded my expectations and would recommend him in a heartbeat.
Andy is known for being the guy you call when you're worried about doing an intervention with someone unpredictable. Not all interventionists are comfortable with things not going as planned and as everyone rehearsed. If you can picture someone flipping furniture or screaming or running away during your intervention, call Andy and get him to facilitate for you.
Andy possesses a high level of compassion and empathy for the people he is trying to help. This combination translates into him being able to establish a connection of trust with people who've been beaten down by addiction, and trust is a critical component of helping an addicted loved one and the family through a very difficult process.
