Kelowna is a small city of just over 130,000 located in the heart of the Okanagan Valley in BC’s Interior. With stunning lake and mountain vistas, world-class wineries, and a leading ski resort on its doorstep, it’s no surprise that Kelowna is a popular vacation destination for Canadians and foreigners alike.
Behind all the beauty, however, there’s a darker side to Kelowna that many tourists do not see.
Despite its natural beauty and year-round popularity with vacationers, Kelowna is not immune to the national opioid overdose crisis. Drug-related overdoses and deaths are a huge problem in Kelowna, just like many other Candian cities. In fact, in 2018 Kelowna recorded 55 illicit drug overdose deaths, placing the city fifth in BC behind Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria, and Burnaby. 49 (89%) of those deaths were related to fentanyl, an opioid used as a pain medication that is often mixed with heroin or cocaine. According to data compiled through toxicology reports, fentanyl was detected in 85% of all deaths in BC last year, up from 82% in 2017.
Drug use and drug-related crime is on the rise in Kelowna, triggering the deployment of extra police resources for a more physical and visible police presence in the city’s downtown core. However, while the city’s homeless make up a large portion of calls to emergency services for administration of the overdose reversal agent naloxone, the majority of the overdose deaths have not been among the homeless population, but rather recreational drug users, using alone in their own homes.
