Recovery in Vancouver

Take the First Step with an Intervention

Greater Vancouver is the largest metropolis in British Columbia, comprising nearly half of the province’s 5.1 million inhabitants. Vancouver is the 3rd largest city in Canada, and has the highest population density in the country. Vancouver is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Canada. Having so many people in one city, also means more stores are selling alcohol and legal marijuana to accommodate all the residents in Greater Vancouver. Drugs and alcohol have become a major issue for many residents living in Vancouver on the Downtown Eastside. Many of the homeless people living on Hastings Street in Vancouver are sexual abuse survivors of residential schools. Survivors of sexual abuse use drugs or alcohol to numb the pain from their trauma. The city of Vancouver has been trying hard to help all the homeless people in the area get the proper help they need. Seventy-five per cent of people living on the streets in Vancouver have serious mental health or addiction issues.

OPIATE ADDICTION VANCOUVER

In 2016, with the increase in opioid-related overdose deaths from fentanyl and tainted heroin, a public health emergency was declared in Vancouver. Over 4,500 people have lost their lives to overdoses across British Columbia since 2016. Many addicts with opiate addictions living on the streets in Vancouver have told professionals that the reason they use opiates is to numb the pain of childhood trauma. Opiate addicts in Vancouver have been using toxic drug supplies contaminated with fentanyl, carfentanil, benzodiazepines and other contaminants. Vancouver is at the epicentre of a serious public health emergency with over 1,000 overdoses per month—just in the city alone. The overdose death rate in Vancouver has increased every year since 2014, and the number of deaths continues to rise each year. Statistically, First Nations individuals in Vancouver may require more funding for private alcohol and drug services, alcohol and drug interventions and private addiction treatment so that they can address and live with intergenerational traumas. More financial support is also needed for Indigenous people living on the reserves in West Vancouver and Greater Vancouver for Indigenous-led initiatives, culture and for more ceremonies to help clients after they leave a drug or alcohol treatment program in Vancouver (aftercare programming). Aftercare support by Indigenous peers and Elders in Vancouver will play a crucial role in saving Indigenous peoples’ lives during the overdose crisis on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

If you are concerned about a family member or friend whose life may be at risk from their drug or alcohol addiction, it might be time to consider an intervention.
